Buying The Right Tyre For Your Suv
Tyres are probably the last thing that you will consider when buying a car
. The car owner"s manual has information on the minimum required size, cold tyre pressures, speed rating and load index. However, there you will not find anything about the right tyre for summer or winter, or for driving in wet rain or in icy climates or which manufacturer you should use and if its an SUV/ 4x4 all terrain vehicle, because there is no way for the car manufacturer to know your driving habits and the actual terrain you"ll end up traversing, so you might have to know a little bit more about what all those numbers and flashes on the on the sidewall of your tyres mean.
Tyre size
The outer face of a tyre usually has a number like thsP225/50/R16
The P is for classifying the tyre as a "passenger" tyre whilst the numbers 225, denote what the width of the tyre is. The "R" stands for radial but since all tyres are radial, some will not have this letter, just the number 16 which is the inner diameter of the tyres in inches.
Load index and speed rating
Beside the size, most tyre sidewalls will also have the load index and speed rating. The load index represents the amount of weight that a tyre can support. The speed rating is a letter which tells you the speed that tyres will sustain. Driving faster than what the speed rating recommends is dangerous which is why race cars will not have the same type of tyres as any other car.
Choosing tyres for SUV"s
Most SUV"s tyres are available in large sizes than standard high performance tyres or summer tyres, sizes range from 15" to 23" wheels, they also have a higher load rating for towing and hauling heavy loads and are generally designed to perform in all seasons if not all terrains. The main consideration for SUV tyres is its driving and breaking performance on all road conditions so the thread pattern is important in this regard. The tyre tread channels water and debris from the inside to the outside ensuring that there"s nothing between the tyre and the road surface, that there is good contact between the tyre and the road at all times.
SUV tyre models compete on tread width and tread design. Tread widths range from 6 to 10 inches while the patterns are either directional or non-directional. Tyres with directional patterned treads usually cannot be rotated diagonally and they tend to wear unevenly. As far as pattern go, most drives go for looks with aggressiveness tyres that look aggressive tend attract most 4x4 enthusiasts. Apart from choosing tyres with tread patterns that look mean, the tendency of buying big sized tyres also prevails. The best thing is to always stay within the car manufacturer"s guidelines and try not to increase the size beyond 3% of the manufactures specification.
