Harrogate or Harrogate Spa is a spa town in North Yorkshire, England. It is located in the HG1 area. The town is a renowned tourist destination, famous for its Turkish baths and natural spa waters which are naturally rich in iron and sulphur. The first mineral spring in Harrogate was discovered in 1571 by William Slingsby, who found that water from the Tewitt Well possessed similar properties to that of the springs of the Belgian town of Spa. They were believed to have healing properties and as a result led to a rush of ill or injured people moving to the area to be cured which increased the financial prosperity of the city.
Due to its location in an area of outstanding natural beauty and the discovery of the Spa, Harrogate began to build itself up as leading northern city. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Harrogate became the destination of choice for the English elite who came to enjoy the fresh air and mineral properties of the water. Harrogate and the HG1 area as a whole still remains a popular choice for people looking to move to the North and property prices reflect this. The HG1 postcode district lies within or includes part of the following towns, counties, localities, electoral wards and stations: Bilton, Granby, Harlow Moor, Harrogate, High Harrogate, Knaresborough Scriven Park, Low Harrogate, New Park, North Yorkshire, Saltergate, Starbeck, Woodfield.
Harrogate's popularity increased when In 1770, 200 acres of parkland surrounding the city were reserved as public commons, known as The Stray, which has remained a popular spot for picnicking, kite-flying, outdoor games and local football matches. Harrogate also has a Georgian Theatre which was built in the 1700s as a means of entertainment to the growing numbers of English gentry who flocked here.
However, this popularity was not to last and slowly declined after World War I as other cities stated to grow and provide more interesting and accessible amenities. During World War II, however government offices were evacuated here from London to protect them from the ever growing threat of bombing. This helped paved the way for the town's current standing as a commercial, conference, and exhibition centre and still popular Yorkshire city.
The town's location makes it ideal for commuters working in the cities of Leeds and Bradford. As a result, Harrogate has become very prosperous and as such has some of the highest property prices in England with many properties in the town and surrounding villages valued at 1 million. The average cost of a 2-3 bed property in the HG1 area at the time of writing is around 115-130 thousand pounds.
