Buying Antique Oriental Furniture: What You Should Know
We all have our own addictions, obsessions, interests
, and collections. It may be as common and well known such as stamps, comic books, action figures, to the more extreme and pricey ones like automobiles and historical artifacts. For some, their collection is found right inside their homes where they are able to enjoy its marvelous sight and brag them once in a while to their guests. These are antique furniture.
If you are a lover of
antique oriental furniture, or simply enjoy the pride of owning
unique house furniture, then you should know not only where to get the great deals, but also how to closely examine the furniture you are buying in order to confirm its quality. Of course finding an
oriental furniture shop is easy nowadays. You can quickly search for
oriental furniture online to have a look at
elegant dcor furniture and what other antique items you can purchase, but in order to know you are getting your moneys worth, you have to educate yourself on some tips on buying oriental and antique furniture.
First, verify the material the furniture is made of. In buying oriental furniture, for example antique Chinese furniture, verify that the item has been made of aged wood. There are signs you can watch out for like, if the wood is more than eighty years old, it will have dried properly. If there are cracks down the middle of a panel or parts of the furniture, this is a clear sign that new wood was used. If, however, a certain degree of separation occurs at the junction of two or more panels, do not worry. This is to be expected. Keep in mind also that, during winter, all woods contract, and there might be a separation that takes place in your furniture, but the resulting separation is kept to a minimum.
Second, check its overall condition. Obviously, the closer to its original condition the piece, the better and more valuable its price will be. For example, if an antique Chinese furniture has lost a lot of its original parts, and a lot of work needs to be done to restore it to its original condition, the price will drop down. However, if the restoration is only done at the joints, the aprons, and near the edges or bottom, it is generally accepted as still being intact and you can get a good price still for the furniture.
Third, research about the items rarity. If the furniture you are eyeing happens to be of a certain style that is not readily available in the market, then it might actually be considered a collectible and its price will significantly go up. This is the basic supply-and-demand rule. Also, look for furniture or dcor that has special features, unusual functions, and maybe even a profound history in them like they were once owned by a prestigious clan. These things all add up to give the item a raise in value. They can be considered highly collectible and their value may increase overtime.
