How to Buy a Kayak
When considering buying any type of kayak it is best to determine what type of kayak you will need, where it will be used, is it for recreation or sport. Do you want to move fast or leisurely, the length and width of the kayak needs to be decided. If the kayak is longer it moves faster but it turns slower and shorter turns well but it moves slower. Also do you want a one man or a group tandem? The hull shape also needs to be considered, a U shape is great for secondary stability and good on rivers and surf, a V shape is great for primary stability and better on flat water. Then there is the tri-form which is stable and good on speed.
Other things need to be considered like storage, where will the kayak be stored, transportation, will you need roof racks or a truck bed. The color is also something to consider whether you want to be seen or to camouflage into the scene. A beginner kayaker would want a kayak that is 9-13' long with a width of about 28" with a roto molding. Lastly safety needs to be considered and proper safety classes need to be taken prior to any riding. It is also a good idea to have tried ocean kayaking previously.
