Buy a cot bed mattress for your child is not exactly rocket science but since they

do not come along with the cot bed, there are certain things to be kept in mind while shopping for one. There are many types of mattresses available and depending upon their features and your budget you will decide upon any one of them.

The foam mattress is one of the most inexpensive and is normally non allergenic. It has holes for ventilation towards the head end with a half mesh half PVC cover. The biggest advantage of the foam mattress is that it soaks any liquid very easily.

The coir or natural fiber mattress is basically coconut fiber covered with latex and then wrapped in wool or polyester. It has a water proof and breathable fabric covering on top. It is firm and lasts for a long time.

The spring mattress is made up of the traditional coiled springs that are surrounded by padding and then water proof covering or PVC. Even this mattress has long life and is supposed to give good support to the back.

The hypo allergenic mattress is meant for those with a history of allergies in their family or asthma. The top layer in these mattresses is quilted and can be detached for washing at 60 C to kill the allergy causing dust mites.

Of the above mentioned, the coir mattress and hypo allergenic mattress are more expensive. However, you must keep a few things in mind when shopping for a mattress. It is best to buy a new mattress for the baby for hygienic purposes. When shopping for a mattress, check for the dimensions of your cot as the mattress must fit exactly into the cot to avoid any kind of mishap or injury to the child. The mattress should not be too deep or too high from the base of the cot. Avoid buying a cheaper mattress as it may have dents in a few months. A good quality mattress like a spring with foam cover gives the back ample support. While PVC is very easy to clean it may absorb heat and moisture, thereby giving the baby rashes. Buy the breathable wipe clean mattress for the babys comfort. Buy the mattress with a removable section.

Mattresses come with the two way ventilation system so when the baby is laid on its back in the Feet to Foot position with the sheets tucked beneath the mattress, the baby can not wriggle and get entangled in the sheets, and his head is still in the ventilated area.

In case you are not buying a water proof mattress, ensure that you have a plastic sheet to protect the mattress from getting wet. Buy one with a central plastic panel and mesh on the outside for air circulation. The top cover protective sheet which lies over the bed sheet is another option as it is made of soft absorbent material and children love to sleep on it.
