Buffalo Bills Tickets - Two Linebackers Out For The Season

The Buffalo Bills are having a rough start to their season

, and recent injury reports aren't making the outlook any rosier. Following their low-scoring 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns during Week Five, linebackers Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs both suffered knee injuries. It was later revealed that both injuries will require surgery, taking them out for the remainder of the 2009 season. Mitchell was the first to suffer an injury, taking a hit to his right knee by two Cleveland linemen in the second quarter. Buggs' injury followed late in the third quarter during a punt return.

Their injuries make the injury to starting middle linebacker Paul Posluszny even more problematic, as Posluszny has a broken left arm and his return date has not yet been announced. Buffalo's defense is also missing two starting safeties, Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott, although neither is expected to miss the entire season. The defense isn't the only problem plaguing the Bills, demonstrated by the score against the Browns. The loss is their fourth out of five games, and they tallied their only win against the 0-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Week Two. So far this season, the Bills are ranked 25th in total offense, although they are ranked 10th in rushing offense. They are also ranked 19th in total defense, weighed down by their 29th ranking in rushing defense but buoyed by their spot at number seven in passing defense. The Bills appeared to have potential during the first game of the season, when they narrowly lost to the perennially competitive New England Patriots 25-24, but that hope was snuffed with a 27-7 Week Three loss to the New Orleans Saints and a 38-10 Week Four loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Linebacker Kawika Mitchell had started all five games prior to his injury, tallying 27 tackles and one forced fumble.

Last season with the Bills, Mitchell started all but one game, finishing with 82 tackles, four sacks, three passes defended, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Mitchell entered the league in 2003 as the second round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2003 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Chiefs, eventually working his way to a starter. In 2007, he was part of the New York Giants team that won the Super Bowl, starting every regular season game and tallying 76 tackles, 3.5 sacks, four passes defended, one interception, his only career touchdown and two forced fumbles.

Buggs had moved to a starter because of injuries, starting two out of the five games so far this season; he has tallied 21 tackles. Buggs joined the Bills in 2008 as an undrafted free agent and although he saw action in four games last season, he didn't tally any tackles. The team will now have to shuffle around outside linebacker Jon Corto, Nic Harris and Ashlee Palmer to fill in gaps at middle linebacker. More than likely, the Bills will be adding a new linebacker to add depth.
