Conventionally they are made of oiled rice paper, but there are various companies that produce fire repulsive lanterns too for increasing the safety of the display. Some lanterns go up to a great height of around 1000 meters and they will last for around 30 minutes and then start floating down. But all this depends quite a lot upon the environmental conditions. The materials with which they are made are completely bid-degradable in nature.
A little knowledge about the components of Sky lanterns might interest you. They are basically a small hot air balloon made from incombustible tissue paper, a bamboo structure and a thin wire. Once they are opened form the packet and the wick is lighted with a match or cigarette lighter, the heat produced from the flame fills the sky lantern with hot air. After roughly 30 seconds, the sky lantern has enough hot air inside to take off into the open sky and soar high.
Once the wick gets burnt-out, the hot air inside the sky lantern gradually cools down and the lightless sky lantern falls smoothly and safely into the ground. The view of which we became witness while they fly in the sky is truly once in a lifetime incident and everybody is sure to cherish it forever.
