Breast Screening Is About Knowing Your Breast Well
Our body is composed of cells and these cells work according to a prescribed mold
. Cells keep on growing, dividing and then dying throughout life. But, when this sequence of our cells get disturbs, the normal cells become uncontrolled. This uncontrolled growth leads to development of cancer and many other diseases.
Same uncontrolled growth of cells when takes place in a woman breasts the outcome is development of breast cancer. At early stages breast cancer does not make itself evident to the patients, but later on it can cause warning signs.
Lumps in breasts or in underarm area are indication of breast cancer, but remember that all of the lumps are not cancer. Lumps can be hard swelled area in breast or they can be tender as well. Sometimes they seem painful or they can be painless.
Swelling around nipples is another symbol of abnormality that can be dangerous. Redness of areolas and swelling making this area abnormally large is also hazardous.
Any abnormal change regarding nipples also requires to be consulted. Nipple changes include inverted direction, any minor leakage of fluid or blood.
These are the changes commonly observed in breast cancer cases. These changes are noticed in breast screening. Breast screening enables to notice any abnormality.
Clinical breast exam is also a breast screening tool, which involves feeling and looking for changes in breasts by a physician.
Self breast exam is another very effective way of knowing about normal and abnormal to chest area. To perform a self breast exam better is first to lie down. It is effective with the reason that it helps you even in getting feel of deeper tissues against chest wall. Placing a pillow below your left shoulder, start movements in up and down way over your breasts. Good is to use your middle three fingers pad to initiate this movement.
After practicing this massage over breast and in underarm area come to nipple area. Using fingers pad stroke your breast with different pressure. First with normal one, this helps you in feeling the area close to nipple and areola. Then press breast with medium stroke to feel closer tissues, and finally with firm pressure to know the deepest tissues in breast against chest wall. After ending up examining right breast, move to left one and do same exercise with left breast as you did with opposite one.
There are a number of abnormalities which appear on the surface skin of your breasts or anywhere else on chest area. To notice such changes entail look of chest area by standing in front of mirror. Look at your breast with calm mind and complete attention. Notice the skin texture, nipple shape and direction, and breast size. Remember that you are a better observer and explainer of normal as well as abnormal changes in your breasts.
Mammography is taken as a gold standard in early detection of any abnormality. It captures the inside image of breasts in an x-ray. A radiologist then translates the x-rays and in case of any abnormality further x-rays of that anomaly are taken to know the nature of it.
Only knowledge of screening tools is not enough, but important is to putting these tools in practice. Remember you are the only person who can find out any abnormality in your breasts, so be quick in reporting that abnormality to get a thorough knowledge about it.
