In many ways, breast reconstruction differs somewhat from elective implants of the purely vanity-driven type
. In many other ways, however, the surgeries share similarities. In one such way, it will largely be left up to the patient to decide what size suits them back when it comes to their implants. Naturally, there are other factors. The doctor will have an opinion and there may only be so much tissue available following the mastectomy. This will also have an impact on the potential size issues. Here are some of the considerations that should go into making a decision.
Types
While implants are a common choice for women seeking breast reconstruction, this is not the only type of surgery available. Some plastic surgeons choose to use the woman's own body tissue to form the basis for the artificial breast. If the possibility exists, the surgeon will want to preserve as much of the original skin as he can in the chest area. As much as elaborate skin grafts can be avoided, they should be, for the sake of aesthetics. If you do want to go a size or two larger than you originally had, you'll need to speak up and choose implant-based breast reconstruction. This will open up additional choices and give you more freedom when it comes to choosing your size.
Choosing Size
As with anyone considering implants, choosing size is an intensely personal decision that ultimately can be made by you alone. Assuming that you choose a form of breast reconstruction that allows for a wide variety of sizes and that your health permits you to have full control over the choice, it comes down only to personal aesthetic choice. Certainly, you can allow your spouse to have a say. Surely you can listen to friends who want to put their two cents in. And you should definitely allow your doctor to give his experienced opinion. In the end, however, this is all just information. You have to make the decision for yourself.
Implant Types
If you're going to have breast reconstruction with implants, you'll be presented with two choices (in some cases; some doctors only work with one type of material): silicone or saline. Silicone implants are by far the most commonly used and are generally praised for their more natural look and feel. Saline is less common, but it has its own advantages. Namely, you can adjust the size of the implant after it has been put in simply through additional injections. With silicone, the ultimate size has to be chosen beforehand. Talk to your doctor about the choice and give a great deal of weight to his opinion.
