Breast Augmentation Implant Placement Options
If you are considering breast augmentation, one of the most important options you must consider is the placement of your breast implants
. The placement of your breast implants can make a big difference not only in the appearance of your results, but also on the longevity of your results and other attendant health effects that may result from your breast augmentation.
There are three options for breast implant placement in breast augmentation:
Under the breast tissue (subglandular)
Under the pectoral muscle (submuscular)
Partially under the pectoral muscle (biplanar)
Submuscular Placement
Submuscular placement of breast implants is the most common breast implant placement during breast augmentation.
Submuscular placement has many advantages. First, submuscular placement does a better job at concealing the implant, which is especially important for women with very little breast tissue. Submuscular placement also seems to reduce your risk of capsular contracture, a serious complication of breast augmentation that can make your breasts hard, deformed, and painful, and may require surgical correction. Finally, submuscular placement of breast implants may improve visibility of breast tissue during a mammogram.
Submuscular placement does have some disadvantages. Some people do not like the breast shape that results and you may need a bigger implant to get the same amount of visible size increase. There may be more postoperative discomfort and a longer recovery time. Also, women who use their pectoral muscles a lot (such as weight lifters) may not like the sensation of submuscular placement. Some doctors even believe submuscular placement may weaken the pectoral muscles.
Subglandular Placement
Subglandular placement of the breast implants is also commonly used.
The main advantage of subglandular placement is that it is a relatively quick procedure with a short recovery time. It also gives a more dramatic result, and, some say, a better breast shape.
Subglandular placement may have a higher risk of capsular contracture. It also does not do as good a job of concealing the breast implant, which is especially important for women who have little breast tissue and are getting saline breast implants (which are more likely to ripple). Subglandular breast implants may also make visualization of the breast tissue more difficult during mammograms, although the extent of the problem has diminished with increasingly accurate tools and practiced screeners.
Biplanar Placement
Biplanar placement is when the implants are placed partially under the muscle. The pectoral muscle is placed over the top of the implant. According to those doctors that use this placement, it gives more "lift" during a breast augmentation and is an excellent alternative to a simultaneous breast lift. Some also claim that this placement has the lowest risk of capsular contracture, but these claims have not been verified.
Others say that the biplanar placement is not stable and increases the risk that breast implants will "bottom out" (sink down the chest wall. The relative risk has not been well-documented.
Picking the right placement for your breast implants is an important part of getting the results you want from the procedure.
