Breast Augmentation: Different Treatment Options For Capsular Contracture
Breast augmentation with either silicone or saline implants is safe
, but there are possible risks and side effects that can occur. Capsular contracture is a condition that is created by the body's immune system attacking the foreign substance. It does this by forming scar tissue around the implant as a barrier to the rest of the body. It can cause a hardening of the breast and can be quite painful. There is no way to predict whether this will occur and even more mystifying is when it occurs on one side and not the other. But, if you do have it on one or both breasts after breast augmentation, here are your options for treatment:
Capsulectomy-This is the most effective treatment because it completely removes the scar tissue from around the implant. By removing it entirely, the risk of re-growth is reduced.
Capsulotomy-Just a portion of the scar tissue capsule is removed. The surgeon goes in and breaks up the capsule from constraining the implants. This is beneficial if you are not experiencing a complete contracture.
Massage and Compression-Massage also helps keep it from becoming hard and stiff. Compression exercises can be performed to stop the growth of the capsular contracture and keep the area soft and flexible. Your surgeon can demonstrate how to do these exercises.
Medications-Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants can be prescribed to help prevent the growth of scar tissue. The body's natural immune response can be inhibited by certain drugs and also prevent infection that can irritate the area. Vitamin E is a common natural ingredient that is also supposed to help keep the area softened.
Ultrasound-This has to be used very carefully as it can damage the implant if used too long. It works by emitting energy that softens the scar tissue and helps prevent the contraction that causes so much pain.
Closed Capsulotomy-If your surgeon suggests this treatment, look for a different doctor. This is a non-invasive method that involves serious pressure and squeezing the implant to break the capsular contracture. This procedure can cause serious damage to the breast tissues, as the implant and is very painful. Manufacturers of implants advise against this option.
Even with the best doctor on the job, capsular contracture can occur. But, if it does happen, you want to make sure that you have an excellent board certified surgeon perform the breast augmentation and then the treatment procedure is necessary. This possible side effect is not very common so you should not let it deter you from getting implants if you are still trying to decide. Your surgeon will evaluate the severity of your condition to help determine the best method of treatment for this painful condition.
