If you have a style that you know works for you, your best bet is to stick with it. This comes with some limitations, of course. We'll get to that in a minute. But let's say you are tall and you are most comfortable in shirts that hit you right below the hip because it compliments your body type. This works for you so stick with that basic style.
Now, sticking with basics does not mean that you don't have to update your look every now and then. Make sure your hairstyle, fashion choices, and makeup have kept up with your lifestyle and your changing body. The styles that worked for you at 17 may not be as flattering or fashionable at 40. It is good to take a good hard look in the mirror every few years. Look at magazines and at women around you. When you do this, you are not making comparisons; you are not judging them or yourself. You are looking at how they dress and just evaluating how up to date your own styles are.
Evaluating is not always easy. It can lead you to become a victim of current trends. When you are looking to make any changes to your wardrobe or overall look, it is wise to avoid following trends too closely. Especially as you get older and travel through a professional career, there are many choices for classic wardrobe pieces that stand the test of time.
