Beautiful Masada
Masada, the location of 2011s performances of the Aida opera and several other big events
, is a very sacred and important place to the Jewish people. However, there is more to Masada than just a pretty face, as the saying goes. Masada is a place of culture, geography, history and great significance for the area. It is important to know all of these things so that you can properly appreciate the beauty and importance of the location when youre attending the Aida opera in June of 2011, and also so you can understand a little bit more about the Jewish culture and what is important to them.
Geography
Masada is located in the South District of Israel. It is a beautiful set of ancient buildings, all fortifications and palaces that are very sacred to the Jewish people, both in culture and history. The Masada is very close to the Dead Sea on the Eastern edge of the Judean Desert of Israel. The beautiful set of majestic palaces sits atop a plateau right there amid all of these important geographical features. Two huge cliff sides measure 300 feet for the western and 1300 feet for the eastern cliff walls. Because of these cliffs, it is difficult to get in and out of Masada, making it excellent for fortifications. Today there are more accessible roads, but the majesty and difficulty still remain to some extent.
History
We learn most of what we know about Masada from the writings of Josephus. The Masada has been a location of fortification and battle since its origin. The first time it was fortified was in 40 BCE by King Herod when he fled from Jerusalem with his family, fearing a revolt of the Jews and danger for himself and those he loved. Several Roman forces were stationed at the Masada throughout the course of the Crusades and the bloody history the Jews share.
Significance
The Masada is a very sacred and important place to the Jewish people, and for several reasons. For Jewish tourists visiting Israel, it is second only to Jerusalem. It is an extremely popular place to conduct Jewish bar and bat mitzvahs as well, and Israeli soldiers are known to take an oath there to the effect that Masada shall not fall again. The fact that the Jewish people survived all of these problems even when the Masada was not fortified by them has made it become a symbol of Jewish survivalism. One of the darkest points about Masada is that 960 Jews committed suicide there in the first century CE.
