Beautiful Bronze Sculptures: Ancient And Modern
Bronze is a metal alloy usually composed of 88% copper
, and 12% tin. The combination of these two metals makes bronze less brittle than iron, which came in handy during the period in history when iron weapons were heavily used. The Bronze Age brought with it the extensive use of bronze in weapons, armor, and in art. Bronze sculptures, vases, and other works of art were widely prized for their beauty and durability.
Some of the most famous bronze sculptures are housed in museums across the globe, but some are privately owned by people who have the money to afford bronze sculptures.
One of the oldest examples of bronze sculptures is the 107 ft tall Colossus of Rhodes. This statue was fashion to please the patron god of Rhodes, Helios. This statue was destroyed during an earthquake, but this giant bronze sculpture was so incredible that is became one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Ancient Greeks loved creating bronze sculptures to please their many deities. There are bronze sculptures dedicated to Zeus, Athena, and others that are scattered about Greece, all of them created before the modern era and still as beautiful as they day they were finished.
Modern, well at least far less ancient, bronze sculptures are plentiful. Modern technology has allowed bronze sculptors to create works of art without the same back breaking processes employed by the original bronze workers. Some of the most prized bronze sculptures of this era are the Statue of Liberty, the Charging Bull near Wall Street in NYC, and many small but wonderfully detailed bronze sculptures, including: sculptures of nude women in different poses, and religious figures (Mary, Jesus and St. Peter).
Bronze sculptures are created using methods of casting. Many of the ancient bronze sculptures were casted using molds made of wax. Understandably, the wax would melt and cause problems with the shape and details of the sculpture. Eventually, synthetic or more durable mold materials have taken the place of wax, such as: plaster, clay, and ballistic gel which has a much higher melting point than wax.
Once the bronze sculptures have been cast, they are finished using different corrosive material to create different patinas, or colors or finishes on the metal. The finishing process gives the sculptor some degree of control over what color the final sculpture will be.
Bronze sculptures are difficult to make, but beautiful once made. They are durable, and stand the battering of the elements, while looking amazing even as they age.
