Barbecue Sauce: A Sauce Or A Condiment?

What exactly is the difference between a sauce and a condiment

? We may often use the words interchangeably, but the truth is, in the culinary world there is a vast difference. A sauce is a part of a meal, and included in the recipe. A sauce can often times be the main aspect of the meal and give it the kick that will differentiate between average and culinary genius. A condiment is an after the fact aspect and is served to you as an optional compliment to the meal.

Many high end established chefs take condiments as an insult to the meal they have prepared and restaurants owned by these top of the line chefs will rarely even have condiments in their establishment.

So then, the question arises, is bbq sauce a sauce or a condiment? Well for starters is does have the word sauce in its title giving way to the fact that it is intended to be used as a sauce. All to often though it is continually used as a condiment, a compliment to the meal. In reality such a novelty as this should most likely be used as a part of the preparation of the meal. This goes far beyond marinading your ground beef in bbq sauce before you squish it into patties and throw it on the grill. I am talking about using barbecue sauce in some of your more sophisticated dinners and seeing how you like it. I am sure you will be surprised.

The initial use of barbecue sauce was just that, as a sauce. As we have devolved in the kitchen as individuals and ventured out into the world of restaurants, fine dinning, and fast food, the art of barbecue sauce has slowly been diminished and taken into the fiery mouth of main stream. Main stream culinary status quo does not state barbecue sauce to be anything included in the fine dining realm. This is where barbecue sauces such as A1 have tried to take on that fine dinning identity. The fact of the matter is though, that barbecue sauce belongs in the sauce section of your refrigerator and not next to the ketchup. It is an aspect of cooking that can revolutionize a couple of main stream dinner nights in your home.

Venture out and try a new type of barbecue sauce, you will be amazed at the wonders it will do to a casserole or a pasta. The key is to go light and be creative!
