Baby Play Mats, Play nests and Play Gyms
We wanted to highlight some of the pros and the cons when choosing a baby play mat or baby play nest and play gym
. All parents to be or parents of very small babies are faced with the dilemma of how best to keep your little one amused when they are too small to crawl or even hold their heads up. Most parents (mums) will find that they are with their baby almost all the time unless they are sleeping so wouldn't it be nice to let baby play (in a supervised environment) giving you that much deserved rest.
The good news is that there are a multitude of play nests and mats on the market that all claim to offer fun and exciting environments for your newborn baby. Some parents may just choose to buy a baby mat, nest and swing to have all angles covered but if you are on a tight budget it soon becomes apparent that baby will begin to grow very quickly which means that all these wonderful toys will be redundant after 6 - 12 months.
The simple solution is to spend your money on one good quality toy and to get baby used to spending time on her own and experiencing some of the sensory elements that the toy offers.
PLAY MATS / PLAY MAT AND GYMS
These are a great all round performer. A large padded
baby play mat will give your baby a soft and clean play surface that will keep them entertained. Initially your baby may only find the mat interesting for a few minutes at a time before wanting to be held again. A newborn baby may only be comfortable lying on her back or stomach. It is always important to stress that babies should never be left unattended in case they run into any difficulties. Mats with the additional of an arch (gym) will allow her to focus and make sense of colourful toys and sounds (if you have musical toys attached).
PLAY NESTS
Play nests are another great play environment for your baby (an inflatable ring surrounded by a soft fabric cover). They are suitable from birth but it should be noted that you should only partly inflate the ring if your baby is unable to hold her head up (always consult the manufacturers instructions). The soft fabric covers provide a multitude of colours and patterns and textured surfaces. The ring is a secure contained environment that will keep your little one smiling and giggling for many hours (you may of course have a few tearful moments in the early days!)
