Fortunately for them, the wedding business is booming and the trend in this growing industry is toward bigger and more extravagant weddings. This means that essential wedding employees like caterers, florists, planners and photographers are earning more than ever. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that the average professional photographer earns more than five-thousand dollars per wedding. That is five-thousand dollars for a single day of work! There arent many jobs that pay that well.
The influx of new blood into this old industry has also had an undeniable influence on the way the average wedding photographer shoots an event. For instance, in the old days wedding photographers did little more than snap staged still shots. What we means is that they would arrange the family or the wedding parting in a certain way and ask them to smile and say cheese.
All in all, it was a fairly pedestrian and predictable way to shoot a wedding, which meant that people often got exactly what they wanted. But the average wedding photographer of today has learned a lot from his professional peers, who were often either newspaper photographers or photojournalists.
How has it changed?
The most obvious difference between a professional wedding photographer and a photojournalist is that the photojournalist snaps mostly action shots, i.e., he doesnt arrange his subjects in predictable poses. Rather, he lets things naturally unfold and he attempts to capture meaningful moments without being intrusive, or worse yet, directorial.
Most of the time, the photojournalist is merely an observer who stays on the sidelines and takes action shots. It is also a fact that most professional photojournalists prefer to take black and white photographs, although many of them can be persuaded to use color.
These photographers have influenced the entire industry over the past few years as their work is said to be more artistic or at the very least more realistic. And because they do not take staged photographs, many couples and families are surprised by the candid shots and true emotion that they are able to capture when people are not aware that they are being watched.
Of course, this does not mean that the traditional way of shooting weddings has vanished from the earth, it simply means that photojournalism is has had a profound influence on how professionals shoot weddings. In fact, even traditional wedding photographers often utilize the style and techniques of the experienced photojournalist. While they still stage photos for the bride and groom and even for the wedding party, they are now far more likely to take action shots during the actual ceremony and the reception.
