While emailing can be SO much easier than talking face to face, particularly for shy people, it can also be too easy to mistakenly communicate something you really don't want to say. Good communication is THE core of a successful long term relationship, and you've got to get it right if you want to stay together. Online dating presents a unique benefit, and pitfall, all in the same package. On the one hand you have the ability to think about exactly what you want to say when you compose an email, and you can avoid the clammy hands, nervous laughter, stuttered words and flushed faces. But on the other hand, you are relying on only one mode of communication - written words on a screen.
It is SO easy to misinterpret the tone or vibe of a series of words, especially when the subject matter is sensitive. Whereas in a normal conversation the speaker could respond immediately to the listener if he/she saw her reaction, when you 'speak' by email, what you say is what you've said, and can't be explained on the spot!
What this means is that LOTS OF RELATIONSHIPS ARE RUINED ONLINE because of miscommunication by email or text message. And the sad part is, they are ruined through misunderstanding - these relationships COULD HAVE WORKED WELL with better email communication.
If you do online dating, you NEED to get really good at writing what you really want to say, how you want to say it. This is not easy. They do NOT teach you this in school. But if you learn to do it right, it could change your online dating experience, and therefore change your life.
