Are Men And Women Getting More Alike?

Men lie more than women

Men lie more than women. According to a survey of 3,000 people commissioned by the Science Museum of London, men averaged 3 lies a day and women averaged 2. Men's top 3 lies were "I didn't have that much to drink", "Nothing's wrong" and "I had no (cell) signal". Women's were "Nothing's wrong", "I don't know where it is" and "It wasn't that expensive". Those surveyed lied most to their mothers - 25% of men and 20% of women. However, only 10% of those surveyed said they lied to their partner - if you can believe that.

Can you believe that attractiveness affects jury decisions? A Cornell study entitled "When Emotionality Trumps Reason" consisted of 169 Cornell psychology undergraduates, who were classified as either rational or emotional decision-makers based on an online survey. The students were given case studies of defendants which included a profile, closing statements, jury instructions and a photograph. In minor cases with questionable evidence unattractive defendants were 22% likelier to be found guilty. Unattractive defendants were also sentenced to an average of 22 months longer in prison. When it comes to beauty being in the eye of the beholder, it seems justice isn't blind.

However, we seem to have been blind to fathers suffering from postpartum depression. An analysis of 43 previous studies found that about 10% of men whose partner is having a baby suffer depression. This depression occurs any time from 3 months before the baby's birth through the baby's first birthday. That's twice the usual male depression rate and it's in the same range as female postpartum depression. Because both sexes face many of the same baby-related stresses - parenting, finances and sleep deprivation - researchers are no longer certain postpartum depression is caused by changes in female hormones. New research into a stress-related cause is proceeding by baby steps.

Moderate drinkers have better health on average than teetotalers. This was the finding of French research in which almost 150,000 people participated and in which moderate drinking meant 1-4 drinks a day. Male moderate drinkers had lower cardiovascular risk, stress, depression and body mass index and higher HDL. Women experienced similar trends and had lower blood pressure and slimmer waists. These results, however, weren't directly attributed to alcohol. Moderate drinkers were less stressed, engaged in more physical activity and enjoyed better lifestyles. Their better health was attributed to being very social social drinkers.
