Are FAD diets halting your weight loss?
We've all done it or know someone who has
We've all done it or know someone who has. Eating whatever you want, whenever you want. Letting your feelings or emotions dictate what you eat. Nothing better than a tub of Ben & Jerry's to cheer you up, right? Next comes the realisation (I've been here too!). You wake up one day, look in the mirror and think .'how did this happen?' Or maybe it was just that those new designer clothes you bought a few months back are a bit more tight fit' than you'd like.
The answer, at least for most (again I've been here too!), is to grab for the newest dieting craze at the time. Atkins, South Beach Diet, The Zone Diet, The Hollywood Diet, 5 Factor Diet, GI Diet, etc there are literally hundreds of these fad diets. They come in and out of fashion as often as clothes and they all offer one thing quick solutions to losing weight. Sounds great, right?
Don't you think if all these trendy fad diets worked then the diet industry would not be worth the billions of dollars it is today? With all these different diets following a strict set of guidelines i.e. restricting carbs, fat, sugars, calories etc it is easy to get confused as to what healthy eating really is.
Current research tells us that 1 out of 3 people will be on a diet at any given point in their life. With only 1 out of 20 actually achieving his/her goal weight! Other studies show that most only stay these diets for 6 months at a time. So what happens after that?
Fad diets are hard to stick to. It isn't easy eliminating whole food groups out of your diet. It isn't easy eating no fat, or no carbs for months on end. For this reason most people following fad diets do actually re-gain the weight and often more!
So what do you do?
The easy answer is stay away from dieting. Good nutrition is about making healthier choices more often and having some basic understanding of what food is, why we need it and how to use it for your own personal gain (whether that's pleasure, performance or weight loss). Healthy eating is simply about consuming the right amount of food from varied sources, and sneaking in those forbidden foods every now and again.
