Innovation is often the result when insight encounters opportunity.
Mike Khalil, owner and founder of Apex Nutraceuticals started his first company, Acai-Zone, after coming across the Acai berry during one of his initial visits to Brazil.
As an established chemist and a respected nutritionist, Mike was so impressed by the characteristics and nutritional properties of the Acai berry that he reviewed every article and research paper published by major laboratories and universities regarding this exotic, rainforest fruit. He not only validated the published information on the Acai berry but also gained new insights, and was able to expertly determine which of the several different Acai berry types offered the highest nutritional potential.
All research and studies to date confirm that the Acai berry contains unusually high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein -- as well as the Omegas 6 and 9 and key amino acids. In addition, Acai is found to have the highest ORAC value among fruits. It's no surprise, therefore, that the Acai berry has come to be labeled "The Super Fruit."
And this remarkable fruit's market potential was immediately evident to Mike.
In 2004, he began to transport quantities of the Acai fruit in puree and powder form for sale in the United States. The demand for Acai increased dramatically once news about the fruit was featured in magazines, television talk shows, and health news programming. Celebrities, talk show hosts, writers and reporters alike were awakening to the unique benefits of the Acai berry, and "The Super Fruit" began to find its way into markets and specific applications. From beverages to cereals -- energy bars, ice cream and sorbets, food supplement capsules, scoop blend powders and soft-gels -- Acai quickly achieved the popularity among health conscious Americans that it warrants.
With a continuing affinity for nutrition research, Mike formed Apex Nutraceuticals, to utilize "The Super Fruit" in commercial applications which accommodate precise needs of the nutrition marketplace. Initially, Apex Nutraceuticals offered two products -- Acai oil and Acai clarified juice -- which found high demand in the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries in the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia.
