An Outline For A Fire Safety Plan The Average Family Uses

No one wants to prepare for the worst- and that includes a home fire

. But the fact is that having a plan in action will greatly bolster the chance that a family will be able to escape from a home fire. Each time a new place of living is obtained, a new fire safety plan should be put into motion.

Fire detection is an industry that has been bettered by technology. There are products out now that can not only detect excessive heat and fire, but also smoke with impressive accuracy. Some products require maintenance and upkeep, however, so always follow the instruction booklet that comes with each device. The amount of maintenance required depends on which product you purchase.

The first step in making a fire safety plan is to find which method of escape is best for each family member. Find a way from each room of the house to get to safety- and be sure to include special scenarios in which you may not be able to use a certain path. Consider windows as a source of escape when doorways are blocked, and do include stickers on the outside of the window to indicate a bedroom.

Having a fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen or garage is going to help greatly in preventing a fire completely. A grease fire, for instance, is next to impossible to stop once its started, unless of course a fire extinguisher is present. Know how to work your fire extinguisher beforehand so there is no mishap when disaster comes about. A fire extinguisher is cheap to buy and maintain, so they should be a part of every fire safety plan.

Having a common meeting point after escaping the home is a good idea. Often times, parents won't know if their children are safe or not and might go back into the home looking for them. They could needlessly be endangering themselves if the child had simply evacuated to a different location. It's usually best to evacuate to the front of the home, where rescue personnel will first arrive to the scene of the fire.

Knowing how to act when escaping the home is also important. One should always feel doors before opening them, for instance. Doing so will prevent a surge of fire from burning the individual. If you are trapped and the only way is out through the door, open it slowly and peek through the crack before opening it wide enough to move through. Also stay low to the ground to escape dangers of smoke and excessive heat.

Final Thoughts

A fire plan should be as complete as possible. An incomplete fire plan is a recipe for disaster. Talk to local fire safety sources, and well known distributors such as MasterGuard for more information. Only then will your family be sufficiently protected.
