With over 1,300 species worldwide, Acacia is an exotic hardwood grown in tropical

and temperate climates throughout Europe, Australia, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Approximately 960 of them are found on the continent of Australia alone. Throughout the world, Acacia trees are referred to as thorn trees, whistling thorns, and wattles.

According to the Book of Exodus, Acacia wood was used in the construction of the Arc of the Covenant. The Bible also mentions a Shittah-tree which in Hebrew means acacia. Some cuts and species of the wood can be a bit dull in color, like Acacia heterophylla from the Reunion Island, while Acacia koa from the Hawaiian Islands has rich, fiery bronze and red hues. Just make sure you get the heartwood if you want the red shades, which will offer the richest color palate. Acacia woods from the orient, which are sometimes referred to as Chinese Walnut have a more brown color. Much of this can be enhanced or fixed with pigments though.
