Abdominoplasty Tighten-up After Major Weight Loss

The skin stretches out and recedes to meet the changing needs of the body

. As a child grows into adulthood, a belly expands with a pregnancy or a physique grows larger with weight gain, it is designed to be elastic enough to roll with the changes.

Just like a pair of pants with an elastic waistband, the fit is flexible enough to handle a range of sizes. If, however, the trousers' waistband is stretched out to maximum capacity for a long period of time, it may not ever cinch inward as it did originally.

If the pants are getting older and a bit worn looking, the elastic may begin to wear out and will no longer fit a thinner inhabitant. Time to get out the needle and thread, take a nip and tuck in the fabric in order to get those trousers to fit again. After a major weight loss, there may need to take a bit of nip and tuck in the abdominal skin.

An abdominoplasty is another name for a tummy tuck procedure. During pregnancy or weight gain, the skin, muscles and fascia in the midsection can get stretched out to maximum capacity. After childbirth or excessive weight loss, there are often folds of sagging skin remaining in the area where a flattened belly used to be.

Not only does it get stretched out, but so does the entire inner girdle area of rectus muscles (stomach muscles) and connective tissue that is known as the fascia. This inner girdle is the portion of the body that holds all of the person's organs tightly in place. The appearance of a flat belly comes from both taut skin and a tightly fitting inner girdle.

An abdominoplasty is a surgery done by a plastic surgeon in order to remove the excess tissue in this region and to surgically reposition it all into a firmer and more slender appearance. The area targeted lies between the navel and the pubic bone. After surgery, the belly button often needs to be surgically repositioned, as well. Liposuction can be performed in conjunction with the tummy tuck in order to remove excess fatty deposits, too.

The tummy tuck procedure takes approximately three hours to perform and usually requires an overnight stay or two in the hospital. A general anesthetic is often chosen as the sedation method. There will be bruising, swelling, pain that should subside during the first six weeks to three months.

After losing a good deal of weight, a person visualizes themselves as being slender enough to walk down the beach with pride. With a flabby, hanging abdomen, this is just not the case. But after an abdominoplasty, they can slip into the bathing suit of their choice and strut along the sandy shore without embarrassment.
