A gentleman's guide to what to wear at weddings
So the season of honeymoons and churches is on us once again yes that's right, it is wedding season. Either as a groom, best man, usher or simply guest there are a number of factors that men should consider when it comes to choosing clothing for a wedding.
Thankfully for a man, wedding or formal wear dress is not overly complicated. Firstly you need to find out if the wedding is black tie. Put simply black tie is a dress code for a formal evening event (we'll come to its components in a tic). If there is no dress code stated on the invitation then you can assume it will be standard smart attire or non-black tie.
Non-black tie
Most men already have a good fitting suit in their wardrobe which can be worn at the wedding however it will look a lot better once it has been dry-cleaned. A wedding suit should follow the seasons with a light-coloured suit (such as grey, light brown) for the Spring/Summer months and a darker suit (such as navy blue, black) for colder months. Blazers with charcoal trousers can be worn although you can come across as a little informal.
Along with the suit you should wear a complimentary smartly ironed white shirt, silk tie and black (or dark brown) polished shoes. There are many clothing retailers in the UK who now offer a wide and varied collection of comfortable and affordable suits for weddings including Moss Bros, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis.
Black tie
When the invite says black tie you know that the affair is going to be an upmarket formal affair so you are going to have to wear a dinner suit (or as the Yanks would say a tuxedo).
A dinner suit is not a particularly complicated ensemble. The main components are the dinner jacket (single breasted with ribbed silk facings on a shawl collar), trousers (with silk braids covering the outer seams), dress shirt (white with Marcella frontage and double cuffs), bow tie (black, which you can buy pre-tied) and smart polished black shoes (such as brogues). Other accessories include a cummerbund, silk handkerchief, cufflinks and braces (just make sure none of them are novelty).
Of course you could always hire a full dinner suit for a wedding (normally excludes the shirt) but if you know a couple of black tie events are coming up (and you don't pile on the pounds) we would recommend purchasing a tuxedo. Boys wedding clothes
Now-a-days a number of retailers such as M&S sell suits and tuxedos for a range of boys ages at incredibly low prices. If however the boy is not a guest but a page boy then he'll need separate attire. In essence a page boy is a young male attendant at a wedding whose job it is to carry a) the bride's train and b) the rings. There are now a few retailers such as BHS who sell a variety of page boy outfits including waist coat and suit.
Formal wear advice
