A Quick Guide to Wedding Planning

Putting together all the elements of your dream wedding day is a big undertaking but wedding planning doesn't have to be daunting or even difficult

. Your wedding will probably be the biggest party you will ever organize but by taking just a few simple steps when you begin planning will help to ensure you have a day to remember.

Your first task when you begin your wedding planning will be to decide on a date. Consult with your closest family about suitable dates which do not coincide with any other event such as birthdays, anniversaries or graduation days. Do choose two or three dates in case your choice of venues for your ceremony and reception are not available on your first choice.

Once you have set the date you can proceed with the rest of your wedding planning. Your wedding budget will dictate the scale and size of your wedding day and will govern just about every decision you make from now on. Download a budget planner from the internet or copy one from a book or magazine. This will help you to apply a figure for each element of your day such as catering, photographs, flowers etc. When you total all these up you will have a figure for the total cost of your wedding. You may need to adjust depending on how much money you have available.

Next comes your guest list. This can be one area of your planning where conflict occurs as you try to balance the number of guests with your budget. Write down those people who are most important to you and put them top of your list. It can be a good idea to create an A-list and a B-list. The A-list will contain all those people who you want to share the entire day with you and the B-list will be those people you invite to join you for the evening reception only. If people on the A-list are unable to come then you can move people from the B-list. Remember that each guest is a cost to your budget so make sure you balance the two.

There will not be a wedding without a ceremony so you next need to decide on whether you want a religious ceremony or civil one. You then need to think about where you will get married and the type of venue. Think about your reception venue at the same time, especially if you are looking at separate venues for both. The rule of thumb is that the reception venue should not be more than 1 mile from the ceremony venue. If you want a civil ceremony you could look for venues which are licensed to conduct wedding ceremonies.

Once you have completed the above you will have the foundations of your wedding in place and will be able to book venues, suppliers and vendors. Use a set of checklists which you can download for free from the internet to help you plan the remaining elements and details of your day and to help you keep your wedding planning on track for the big day.
