The child is told to eat everything despite their smaller than adult stomachs not needing it, nor requiring it. Over the years the child becomes accustomed to eating larger amounts and feeling full' at the end. Feeling full is a sign that there isn't much more room left for additional food and not that someone has had enough'.
There have been tests to show that if you are blindfolded and asked to eat a plate of food, many people will often finish around 75% of the amount before feeling full, compared to if they are able to see the food as they eat, where it is generally 100% of the food. These tests suggest that people are inclined to eat all of the food, to clear the plate, despite not needing it.
Next time you eat, eat slowly and be consciously aware of how your stomach feels. Do not allow yourself to become distracted by the television or conversation, instead, focus on your food and your stomach. You may be surprised to find that your body signals when it's had enough before the plate is empty. When it does, there is no need to finish the remainder. There is no need to feel you are wasting it by throwing it away. If you get into the habit of listening to your body when it's telling you it's had enough, you'll actually be saving food in the long run.
