6 Things To Consider When Doing A Wedding Running A Florist
Weddings are one of the most "design" intensive jobs as a florist
. It can also be one of the most lucrative. If you are a bride, beginner florist, a business person looking to possibly start a florist, wedding boutique or If you really just want to gain a little more insight on the subject we have included a list of steps from start to finish that an advanced master designer would use to appropriately handle a bride and her wedding.
STEP 1 : TALK AND WORK WITH THE BRIDE
This step seems pretty common sensical but a good deal of florists and people planning weddings don't usually spend enough time with the bride. Determining what a bride "really" wants is the key to a successful wedding.
STEP 2 : USE THE CLUTCH AND CASCADE BOUQUET METHOD TO DRIVE THE DESIGN
The one constant that is in every wedding is the bride is going to have a bouquet. A really good tip is to get a feel on which one she likes. If she likes a clutch, she is probably after a rounder, less abrasive look to most of her bouquets (think hydrangea). If she likes a cascade type bouquet she probably appreciates more angles and jagged edges (think roses). Use this as a driving force for the rest of your designs.
STEP 3 : COLOR
Color coordination is also key in determining how the design should be laid out. Once we come to agree on types of flowers and how they are arranged, it makes sense to determine what colors will be intertwined. For instance, a current trend is that the bride and bridesmaid contrast their arrangements so the bride would maintain color in her bouquet but the bridesmaid would be white, and vice versa.
STEP 4 : PRICE "STEP" YOUR WEDDING PARTY
So determine a hierarchy with your wedding party in both types and quality of the flowers associated with each individual. For an example on the man side of the house your ranking might be:
Groom, Groomsman, Ring Bearer, Fathers, Grandfathers, Godfathers
So the groom would get the most quality piece (as well as the most expensive) followed by groomsman, ring bearer, etc..
It is important to note that all of these flower arrangments should be similar as too match a pattern for the bridal party.
STEP 5 : AGREEMENT THEN OFF THE CHURCH
We try to offer the bride 3 price options based on flower quality and amount of flowers. We try to use a GOOD|BETTER|BEST scheme to allow for flexibility. We then make sure that the bride pays her bill a month before the wedding. Try not to use Upsell tactics the first time you meet a bride as its a stressful enough time for her as it is. Once the big day comes we arrive at the church to drop off the wedding party flowers, setup the pew bows (bows on the aisles in church) and deploy the crash. We advise our brides to go purchase a crash elsewhere as the cost is usually prohibitive through a florist. We then setup any of the ceremonail pieces around the altar (traditional catholic/christian) and head for the reception.
STEP 6 : RECEPTION AND CLOSE
We then deploy the arrangements for the head table, cake table, and guest table.. possibly card table all based on the overarching "theme" of the wedding. We show up later to pick up any props after the dust settles and close out the wedding. We try to call the bride to get a feel for how things went a week or two after.
