A hundred years back, one would have been absolutely stunned upon hearing that a male is infertile

Infertility in males affects about six percent of the male population between the ages fifteen to fifty. The numbers are outstanding and there are too many causes of infertility in males and still counting. These causes all boil down to biological, psychological and environmental factors.

1. Low sperm count This is the most common cause of infertility in males. Research suggest that sperm count worldwide has dropped to an alarming fifty percent since the 1940s and the reason for this terrible fall can be traced back to environmental factors like food water and air. People have been eating unhealthy foods and more unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking. The environment is also making it worse with the presence of environmental pollutants such as chemicals.
Sperm count is an important indicator of fertility. A normal count should be at least 20 million sperms per one 1 milliliter of semen. If you have a count of less than 10 million, there is a high chance that you are infertile.
2. Poor sperm quality and motility This is another major cause of infertility in males that involves the condition of the sperm. When you have poor quality sperm, it may not be able to penetrate the egg when it reaches the woman's uterus.
Sperm motility on the other hand refers to the sperm's ability to move in the direction of the awaiting egg in a swift and rapid pace. Some men are born with an abnormal shape in their sperm causing it to have poor motility.
3. Genetic defect This cause of infertility in males come in many forms and the most common is the abnormal development of the testicles as a result of low sperm production and testosterone. It can also affect a male's normal X and Y chromosomes and make it into two X and one Y.
4. Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) If you have contracted an STD from your partner, you might be in for a big infertility problem. Some of these diseases are a threat to your fertility status such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Mumps have also been identified as a major cause of infertility in males. This disease often attacks younger boys aging 6-12 years old.
