3 Pitfalls To Avoid When Planning Your Wedding

There is a lot that goes in to weddings

There is a lot that goes in to weddings. There are a ton of different people involved, at least two distinct venues, there's travel and gifts and wedding favors, there's food and drink and bands. When there are so many things involved in one event, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Some of them are big, some of them are small, but they all can really cramp your day. Here are a few of the biggest mistakes you can make- and how to avoid making them.

The first thing you want to do is figure out far in advance what your priorities are. What's most important for you on your special day? Is there this one photographer that you must have? Is there a band that you've wanted to play for you since you were a child? Do you feel very strongly about what food is served? Do you just need to have totally unique wedding favors that no one has ever seen before? Whatever it is, know ahead of time. Not only will you be able to allocate the extra cash to make sure these important items end up just right, but you'll know to devote extra attention to monitor them and make sure there are no real slip ups.

Speaking of slip ups, it's important to make a few decisions regarding serving alcohol at your wedding. Even if you don't drink, chances are many of your guests do, and it's the polite thing to do to accommodate them. Now, there are circumstances where it would be understandable to not serve alcohol. For instance, if both sides of the family are thick with alcoholics, then it makes sense if you don't want to serve liquor. But most of the time, you will have an open bar available. It's generally considered poor form to make people pay for their drinks at the reception, as they have presumably already gotten you a gift, and made the effort to travel out to participate. While some people want to have an open bar to ensure that everyone gets the drink they want, it's better to just serve a wide range of alcohol and trust that people will be able to find something that will hit the spot.

Overall, this points to the most important thing you need to do to throw a great wedding- you need to relax and trust other people. One of the biggest things people like to micromanage is the music. I know a number of musicians and DJs that work weddings, and they all have the same complaint- they aren't given enough freedom to make the evening flow properly. Often times they are so beset with requests to play that they are never able to put together a great set list that works well, and instead are forced to play song after song without any feel for whether they flow well in to each other. Relax and let the musicians do their job as best they can. For that matter, relax and let everyone do their jobs as best they can, and you'll enjoy the night a lot more.

Keep these tips in mind, and you will avoid some of the biggest pitfalls people face on their wedding days. There will still be snags here and there, and some things will most certainly go differently than you expected, but that doesn't mean you can't plan around these worst case scenarios.
