2 Things To Watch Out For When Buying Used Car Seats
For new parents, finding a good car seat can be tough
. There are a bewildering number of models, all sorts of configurations, and some can be VERY pricey! The temptation then comes to look for a used car seat either at 2nd hand store or at a garage sale. The prices are usually lower, even if the selection is much more limited. But that doesn't matter because a seat is a seat, right? Well, not so much. Before you comb through the garage sale pickings you need to know the two major things to watch out for when buying a used car seat.
Are all the parts actually there? My wife and I bought a toddler sized car seat at a neighborhood garage sale a few years back. It looked to be in good condition, seemed solid enough and was the right price ($20). When we got home with our purchase and tried to install it we ran into problems. The back was really wobbly and didn't keep a secure hold on the seat belt. In this condition it was not safe to use, so we just put it in a corner of our garage until I could figure out what was wrong with it. I discovered later after searching online that an important piece of adjustable hardware was totally missing, making the seat unusable. The sellers probably didn't even realize it was missing, but not being able to recognize that not all the pieces were there cost us both time and money.
Car seats can expire like milk? Well, not exactly. But that's what ran through my head when my wife and I and our first baby were about to leave the hospital and the nurse told us she had to make sure our car seat wasn't expired. It does sound funny, but it's serious business. If you have a car seat that is expired, or subject to a recall, THEY WON'T LET YOU LEAVE WITH YOUR CHILD. Luckily we had purchased a new, quality car seat beforehand so my lack of knowledge didn't result in any problems. Before you pick a used seat, check online to make sure it's not expired or subject to any recalls.
You can find good deals on car seats on the used market. But beware; you can come across a lot of garbage too. Be careful and know EXACTLY what it is you're looking for. In the end, you will probably be better served simply getting a new model from a quality store or online. It is an investment in your child's safety and will last a long time.
