10 Reasons To Start Yoga

When it comes to starting yoga, there are plenty more than just 10 reasons why you should

, but I guess we have to start somewhere. Take a look through and I expect you'll find several reasons that apply personally to you.

1. Relief of stress. The stress hormone cortisol has been found to have negative consequences on the body and if you are feeling stressed regularly, then that isn't good. Practising yoga lowers the level of cortisol in the body which will help to decrease blood pressure and the heart rate. You can also expect a boosted immune system, less anxiety and depression.

2. Relief of pain. Using a combination of yoga postures (also known as asanas) and meditation sufferers from cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and back pain have reported less symptoms from practising yoga. Some practitioners report easing of emotional pain too.

3. Improved breathing. With all the focus on taking slow and deep breaths, lung function is something that gets improved. The body's relaxation response is triggered and an amazing side effect is increased oxygen becoming available to the body which helps cells and muscles.

4. Improved flexibility. Practitioners have reported that flexibility and mobility has been improved with regularly practice. Quite often new comers to the exercise cannot touch their toes when they start but they soon strengthen and lengthen their muscles and enjoy better body alignment for improved posture and less muscle issues.

5. Increased strength. The wide range of yoga postures ensures that every muscle in the body is exercised. This goes a long way in relieving muscular tension whilst strengthening the muscles.

6. Weight control. With all that exercise and building of muscles, it's possible to keep weight maintained. The decrease of stress hormone, cortisol and greater development of the muscles means that you'll eat less and your calories will be better managed by the body. Look out for a sense of well being and increased self esteem as a benefit.

7. Improved circulation. Yoga moves blood around the body, and with all that deep breathing, it will be better oxygenated. The cells of the body are going to be directly benefited. This is why many yoga practitioners look much younger than their years.

8. Cardiovascular benefits. Resting heart rate can be lowered by practising even gentle moves of yoga. As you gain more experience you'll be able to exercise more vigorously and enjoy greater benefits.

9. More relaxed. Learning how to focus on the 'now' as opposed to a regretful past or a worrisome future can provide us with the benefits of being less stressed and creative.

10. Inner relaxation. Practising meditation with yoga will provide you with a feeling of inner peace.
