Create Business Systems By Making Decisions

When you're a fairly new business it can be really hard to "think big" in terms of what you're doing now and how it might be setting you up for the future, in terms of a "growth positive", or a "growth neutral" way. As we start out, we're so excited to be doing things for ourselves, thinking about why we're doing things and how we might do them next time, often isn't part of the picture. Thinking strategically is really the farthest things from our minds as we have 10 different hats on multitasking, being a jack of all trades, doing this, waiting on that, and just when you have finished one thing and you pat yourself on the back, there is still more things to do.

Something that I'm discovering lately in terms of how I want my business to be is that the key is to base your decisions on what you want your business to be like in the future, not what it's like now. It comes down to that concept of acting "as-if", that is, acting as if you are already there, as if you have already achieved your ideal business. If you're making decisions right now in your business based on what you want your future business to look like that is not only laying a strong foundation for your business, but is also creating a platform from which you'll be able to leverage from later on. Because as you're making these decisions based on what the future version of your business is going to look like, you'll find that you're actually creating systems to support how you want to work and how you want your business to function, because you're not thinking "in" your business, you thinking at a level beyond that.

This level of thinking is all about strategy, planning and visioning. Its about what can you do now, to give you the type of business you want to have in one year, two years, five years. When you're only reacting to things going on around you in your business, you never have the chance to question "Is there a better way. How can this be accomplished better, faster, cheaper?"

So, they key is, to take the time, take a step back and act "As-If". Make decisions today based on what you want your future business to look like and in doing so, you'll be creating a platform to better leverage your time, effort and money so that you can focus on growing and building your business both now and in the future.
