subject: Mesothelioma Pericardial The Most Deadly One [print this page]

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that's almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. In this illness, malicious cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers almost all of the body's internal organs. Its commonest site is the pleura ( outer liner of the lungs and internal chest wall ), but it may also happen in the peritoneum ( the lining of the intestinal cavity ), the heart, the pericardium ( a sac that surrounds the heart ) or tunica vaginalis.

Mesothelioma, or asbestos cancer as it is frequently called, is labeled into three groups depending to their nature of infection. While the peritoneal and pleural types accounts for more than ninety percent of all occurrences, mesothelioma pericardial, which affects the protective sac around the heart, accounts for only around five percent. However, this type is deemed to be more severe than the other two. Researchers and doctors in the field aver that probabilities of survival after being getting infected is quite grim.

As in the case of other types, mesothelioma pericardial is also detected very late. The apparent symptoms would be heart palpitations, pain in and around the chest, experiencing breath shortage, continuous cough and so forth. Detection usually occurs only ten to fifty years after a person gets infected, thereby impeding chances of treatment method and recouperation. It has been noticed that most patients pass away within six weeks to one year after detection. Therefore, the emphasis so far is to improve the quality of the affected person's life rather than putting him through distressing therapies and medications.

But there is a glimmer of hope here as recently available researches have come up with alternate therapies and treatment strategies which may be able to prolong the lives of mesothelioma pericardial patients. Immunotherapy, which seeks to enhance the immunity of the body as well as gener therapy are two such therapies. However, it is always much better to take deterring measures than curing the disease later. Therefore, anyone who had been exposed to asbestos for more than ten years should invariably get checked thoroughly to detect any trace of asbestos infection. Family members of such men and women also need to be extra careful.

The government, after watching the destructive effects of asbestos, has introduced certain regulations on the use of asbestos and has armed affected citizens with the right to demand for compensation. There are many attorneys and lawyers in this field who would be able to fetch handsome compensation money in a short time frame. The money thus accrued would serve as a buffer against loss of job due to ill health, costs to run the household and meet medical expenses.
