subject: Helping Children To Cope Through Their Fears by:Naomik West [print this page] As parents we have the duty to make a point that our youngsters grow up with the things that they need and discover how to read, think for themselves, and of course conduct themselves. If things went the way we want our favourite little ones would not experience anguish or sorrow or even fear.
Unluckily life is not always pleasant and our children may feel these emotions at certain points in their lives. While we might have the power to shield them from much of the hurt and sadness in the world the one thing that is tricky to control is their fear. Youngsters might be afraid of most anything starting at a young age.
I have known numerous children that were afraid of water, the dark, or even grass. It is true that certain fears work to our advantage because it saves them from venturing into risky situations. Kids who are fearful of water won't presume go anyplace near a swimming pool the moment you turn your back. Yet, fears will only hold them from sincerely living their life and it is our job to help them contend with that fear.
There are things that you are able to do to help them deal with these fears - but you will have to take it slow and remember that patience is required in order to help them. Encourage them to experience whatever it is that frightens them and show them that everything is fun. If they are scared of the water then try holding them close to you and taking them into the water with you.
If they are able to sense your arms close to them and know that you are not going to suddenly let them go then they will feel a lot safer. Show them how fun the water can be and what you are able to do while you are in it. Possibly find a pool toy and have them play with it. Ensure that you do not become cross with them. Instead you should be supporting them.
Try to get in the water with them everyday or around three times a week to assist get them through their fear. It may take days or even weeks - but soon they will grow to enjoy it and have a better feel of it.
