subject: Don't Skimp on Web Design [print this page]

Website design is foreign to many business owners. Small businesses and contractors in particular jump into it without much knowledge about it. The common way many of them find a local website designer or developer is to hop onto their favorite classifieds website and peruse the ads. There's a big problem with this approach.

Most classifieds websites are littered with overseas or inexperienced "web designers" advertising their services for $99. One quick word of advice:

Don't buy into this cheap web design trap!

You get what you pay for. You hear that said about everything. Automobiles. Computers. Furniture. Now I'm saying it about web design. You get what you pay for when it comes to your business website. If you only want to shell out $99 bucks then you're going to be disappointed.

Think about it this way. Your business persona is displayed through your website. It isn't just a business card or a yellow page ad. When your customers and prospective customers think about you, they think about your website. Maybe if you've had some direct face time, you can overcome that image. However, typically it's your web design that portrays you. Do you want to stake your business on a cheap $99 venture?

If you are trying to gain a client, and you take them out to dinner to try and close the deal, where do you take them? You can try taking them to the greasy, dirty fast food chain joint down the street. I hope you don't really want their business, because you won't get it. Instead, you go all out. You wine and dine them at a fancy, upscale restaurant. Maybe it isn't too fancy, depending on your business and the client. But it's nice.

Website design for businesses is the same way. You don't want to skimp out by buying a cheap $99 web design package. No, you need to give your business the best chance possible to thrive. You are using it to bring in customers, treat it that way.

That being said, don't be taken advantage of. This is where getting several proposals comes into play. If 3 web designers tell you they can build it to spec for $5000, and a fourth gives the same project a $10000 quote - something might be wrong. It's possible that the fourth designer is just that much better than the others. Chances are slim though. Be careful.

Please, when thinking about your business website, don't skimp on the price. Hire a local, quality web designer that will give your business the opportunity it needs to succeed.
