subject: You Should Make An Informed Decision Regarding Botox Treatment [print this page]

Botulinum toxin type A, or Botox Adelaide is the name of the drug that will be injected. It is produced using the bacteria that cause botulism. Botulism is a severe type of food poisoning that can be fatal if not treated immediately. The toxin produced by the bacteria affects the CNS, central nervous system. Botox is often associated with the treatment for wrinkles. Besides treating wrinkles, it has other medicinal uses as well.

Botulinum toxin type A is a treatment that provides a temporary effect, usually lasting approximately three months. In addition to wrinkles, it is used for: cervical dystonia, severe axillary hyperhydrosis, blepharospasm, and strabismus. It is not a cure.

Cervical dystonia is a painful condition caused by severe spasms in the neck muscles. These spasms can result in an abnormal head position. After the injections you should start to see improvement within the first two weeks.

Sever axillary hyperhydrosis is excessive sweating from your armpits. When topical creams are not producing the desired results, then botox could be tried. There are special preparations you will need to make 24 hours prior to injection.

Blepharospasm is a muscle condition of the eye caused by a nerve disorder. It causes uncontrolled blinking and spasms in the eyelid. Improvement after treatment can be seen within the first three days.

Strabismus is another muscle condition of the eye. It causes the eyes point in different directions. Affects of the injection can usually be seen with one or two days gradually intensifying over the course of the first week.

Your doctor should be aware of any and all health problems. There are circumstances when testing needs to be done before injections can begin. The dosage may also need to be adjusted.

Injections of botulinum toxin type A should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless it is deemed necessary by your physician. The effects are unknown in unborn children. It is also not known if the toxin is passed on through breastfeeding.

You should also be aware that the toxin could disseminate to other areas in the body. Thus resulting in serious or life-threatening adverse reactions. These adverse reactions can appear weeks after the initial injection. If at any time you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as: hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, or tongue, you should seek emergency treatment immediately.

Your pharmacist or doctor can provide you with a complete list of side effects. You should report any reaction to your physician. Report any adverse effects promptly, do not wait until it gets worse.

Only let a trained medical professional administer the injections. There are specific guidelines for the administration of botox. Also, refrain from treatment if you have any inflammation, infection, or muscle weakness in the area to be injected.

When administered properly, treatment can help reduce your symptoms. Any questions or concerns you may have should be discussed with your doctor before beginning treatment. Only begin treatment when all your questions have been answered.
