Some Treatments For Anorexia Nervosa

There is an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. In this common eating disorder, people starve themselves to reach and maintain what they believe to be an ideal weight.

What makes this control of calories and food destructive is that the ideal weight being sought is generally far below a truly healthy weight. If you are anorexic, you need treatment. It can be seriously unhealthy, or even life-threatening, to be anorexic.

With treatment, however, someone with anorexia can live a normal healthy life. Here are a few of these treatments.

Family behavioral therapy is often very helpful. Generally, when there is a person with anorexia in the family, other family members have to start controlling the eating habits of the affected person. This has to stay this way until the person who suffers from anorexia is back to a healthy weight. At that point they can once again control their own eating.

Do you think that you are possibly starving yourself to meet an ideal? If so, please see your doctor. Your doctor can advise you on nutrition and also treat any underlying disorders, such as heart problems, depression and even osteoporosis, that may be contributing to the anorexia.

Nutritional counseling is also very valuable in combating anorexia nervosa. A registered dietician can set up a nutritional plan for you and teach you how to eat healthy again. You don't have to worry that you will lose total control or start eating in unhealthy ways.

Family therapy is also part of healing from anorexia. Parents have to watch the anorexic child's eating and also their exercise to make sure they are not burning more calories than they are taking in, in an effort to continue unhealthy weight loss. Generally, parents will also learn how to prepare foods and help the anorexic child deal more constructively with hunger.

Are you hoping to be fit and healthy? If so, you need to maintain a truly healthy weight. If you are anorexic you need to realize that this is probably a higher weight than you would like. Get treatment for your condition, as it can seriously damage your health.
