subject: Interesting But Discrete Places To See In Beautiful Austria [print this page]

Austria is a place that draws in a great number of travelers from all over the world throughout the year, because it is just such a great place to be in! Obviously, the grand majority of tourists are people who love to go snowboarding, skiing or other winter activities. Indeed, Austria is perfect for skiers, due to the numerous resorts situated in the impressive Austrian Alps. Tens of thousands of kilometers of ski runs welcome their users annually. However, since this land has an interesting history and gave the world such a great variety of internationally recognized artists, touring Austria is also an opportunity to see stuff like Mozart's birthplace, the Vienna Opera House and numerous other famous cultural attractions.

However, not too many tourists are aware about other, less talked about locations that are very interesting to visit, like the beautiful Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck and the vast Werfen Ice Caves, a few kilometers away from the same city. And it's a bit of a shame too, as there are other attractions that only local residents seem to know of, like the Golden Roof or the Hellbrunn Castle.

You'll find the Ambras Castle over the town of Innsbruck, high up on a big mound close by. It was raised by Archduke Ferdinand II, and it was this guy's home for nearly three decades, from 1563 to 1595. Due to this fact, the name of Ferdinand II always appears along with the name of Ambras Castle in almost all discussions about this building. There are several beautiful halls in the palace that you should see, and the most interesting is the great Chamber of Arts and Curiosities, a long hall filled with old mechanical devices , statues, paintings, furniture and other objects. The bronze animals, rock crystals, coral crucifix and the painting of Dracula are just a few of the things that will surely impress you when seeing them first hand. Second, the Spanish Hall is really tall and long, being the perfect setting for today's classical music concerts that are regularly held in Innbruck throughout the whole year. The Upper Castle and the Armories are also sections you shouldn't miss.

The other tourist attraction I should mention is the largest cave system on the planet, the Werfen Ice Caves! Nearly 40 km of caverns are interconnected under the Alps around Innsbruck, transforming relatively small caves into a gigantic labyrinth that was a gathering point for geologists for about two centuries. The section open for visiting doesn't exceed one kilometer though, but who would like to go 40 kilometers on foot anyway, right? The grottoes are full of fantastic looking ice structures. This doesn't resemble anything you saw until now, trust me.

Like I said, you can discover many other extraordinary things to see in Austria besides the Werfen caves and the Scholss Ambras, you just need to look around. Here's a tip: if you go to Austria, don't put all your trust into your standard tourist flyer. Instead, why don't you ask some locals where to go and what to see. You will love it when you find out there are some great, less known locations in almost every town you'll visit.
