Planning a pipe network: some important points

Author: Arthor Greenwald

When planning the installation of an industrial pipe network, ether on a large or small scale, there are three vital points that need consideration.

Firstly, the pipes, pipe fittings and flanges should be made from a material most appropriate to the purposes for which they are intended:

The material must be capable of withstanding the substances passing through the pipes. Some metals are more prone to corrosion than others, particularly where chemicals are being transferred. There may also be a danger with expansion of the metal following the transfer of very hot substances

The material will also have to be resilient in the face of pressures from the environment in which it is located. Pipes laid under water for example may require a different material composition to those placed in close proximity to sources of extreme heat

The material used must be efficient in relation to the networks core purposes. Some materials , for example, are better at conducting heat than others

Secondly, costs and budgets should be planned carefully:

There are several resilient and anti-corrosive metals on the market but some work out much more expensive than others. Across large networks in particular, total costs can soon mount steeply

Thirdly, due care should be paid to planning the physical construction of the network:

Any welds or connections using pipe fittings or flanges must be carefully planned in order to minimise the chances of potential weaknesses in the network

All pipe fittings or flanges need to be checked for compatibility with any existing fittings and with each other; European pipe fittings for example have a specific PN/DIN classification whereas American pipe fittings are made to a different specification based on the ASA/ANSI standard
