3 Reasons Where You May Need To Use Travel Medical Insurance

Anyone who travels, whether occasionally on vacation or routinely on business, should consider the purchase of travel medical insurance. The three most common reasons for needing medical travel insurance are the coverage limitations under standard health plans, the high cost of emergency medical evacuations and provision of gap coverage when a person is otherwise uninsured.

Many standard health insurance plans, especially network plans such as HMOs, limit or even exclude coverage when an insured person is outside the plan's geographic area. Some plans limit services outside the geographic area to emergency room visits only; other plans exclude all non-network services. Travel medical insurance can provide coverage while a person is on a trip, despite the limitations of the person's standard plan.

If a traveler becomes seriously ill or has an accident and needs to be medically evacuated, most standard health plans will not cover these costs. Travel medical insurance provides for medical evacuation coverage, including bringing the injured or ill traveler home from overseas. Without this kind of coverage, the out-of-pocket costs for an evacuation could be immense.

Finally, for a person who otherwise has no health insurance, travel medical insurance offers gap coverage at least during the period of any trip, at a relatively low cost. While it is not a comprehensive plan for all health care needs, it can provide the peace of mind that health care costs, particularly emergency services, will be covered while the person is away from home.
