subject: The Cosmetic Dentistry Guide [print this page]

The truth is that these days society is obsessed with appearance and your smile might be something that people notice first. With A list celebrities setting the standard it is little wonder that this industry is worth over three billion dollars. A whiter smile is a must have for the fashion conscious.

An ever growing number of people go to the dentist for cosmetic reasons, more commonly known as cosmetic dentistry or aesthetic dentistry. Why do people go to the dentist for cosmetic reasons some people go to improve their appearance and some may need to go as a result of an accident or illness from birth that has discoloured or disfigured teeth.

Generally people will consider cosmetic dentistry if they suffer from lack of confidence which can be caused by broken, stained, missing teeth, gum problems or cracked teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry is not just for the vain it is also used in situations where someone has lost some or all of their teeth involuntarily. Where once you may have displayed a perfect white toothy grin the result of a biking accident, for example, could lead to loosing teeth and could leave you feeling self conscious and in pain.

Thanks to cosmetic dentistry we have come a long way from unnecessary procedures like extracting all teeth and replacing them with ill fitting teeth that can be very painful to installing a full set of pearly white implants

Dental implants are made from pure titanium and are used to restore teeth that have been broken cracked. The implant is fused into bone and forms a structural and functional connection between the living bone and the implant. Once they are placed in the jawbone they naturally bond with the bone to give support and sturdyness.

Dental implants are like real teeth, once implanted they can only be removed by a dentist. The Dental implants stay firmly in place which means that you can laugh, smile and eat knowing that you look good and that your teeth are safe.

Tooth whitening or bleaching is probably the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure. Teeth can become stained for a variety of reasons the most common causes of staining are from food and drink such as drinking coffee, tea and red wine

Stains cannot be brushed off teeth, however brushing is a preventative way of looking after your teeth, to improve the whiteness of your teeth to several shades brighter than before you will require the help of a cosmetic dentist.

Tooth whitening comes in various forms from natural bleaching, laser bleaching, bleaching strips, bleaching pens to at home whitening kits with a guard tray. Most dentist do not feel that the at home option is the best and will take longer to see results.

How does tooth whitening work. Oxidizing agents penetrate the tooth and over a period of time the layer under the enamel will be bleached which lightens the tooth colour by several shades.

Other cosmetic procedures that are available are straightening, repair, add veneers, crowns bridges and white filling. Cosmetic dentistry is a specialised profession and must be carried out by a qualified dentist.
