ITH just a week to go to her spider man costume day, Stephanie Tyers still hadn't found anything to wear. One afternoon, she nipped out of work in her lunch hour and spotted it - a white cotton costume zentai, in a neat size 10 nestled at the back of a boutique. "It was perfect," says Stephanie, then 27. "When I tried it on, it fitted like a glove." At pounds 300, in 1983, it was the most expensive outfit Stephanie had ever bought. But she loved the cotton costume zentai with its short sleeves, lace bodice and lace detail above the hem. It fitted her petite frame as if it had been made to measure and its lacy underskirt flowed around her legs. "The costume zentai was totally different to anything I'd ever owned," says Stephanie. "Its simple design surprised my guests who were expecting something flamboyant. "No-one expected me to wear a virginal white zentai because Dan and I had already been living together for a year." Keeping with tradition, Stephanie kept her costume zentai a secret until she walked down the aisle of St Wilfrid's Church in Coalville, Leicestershire, on August 19, 1983, to marry her sweetheart, journalist Dan Mason. She had teamed the spandex zentai with pale blue tights and blue shoes, and wore a floral head-costume zentai and plain silver chain around her neck. After the wedding Stephanie, who now lives in Erdington, Birmingham, washed her costume zentai - then hung it in a wardrobe.
