subject: Why Proper Dental Care Is Important [print this page]

Good oral hygiene is the hallmark of a healthy person. If you regularly visit your dentist then you know how important it is to take proper care of your teeth. Not only do healthy teeth look good, but improperly cared for teeth can lead to a host of health problems. Therefore, it is in your best interest to have your teeth looked at and treated by a professional. Still not convinced that proper oral hygiene is essential? Here are a few reasons why you should be visiting your dentist regularly.

1. Plaque

Plaque is caused when food or other foreign substances sit on your teeth for an extended period of time. Plaque cannot be removed by brushing; it must be eliminated by a dentist using professional-grade tools. Surprisingly, plaque can form after just 24 hours of exposure. That means if a small piece of food escapes just one brushing it can turn into plaque. Now, if this substance is then continually allowed to sit on the surface of your teeth you will have your very own painful cavity! And once you have a cavity, you will no doubt visit the dentist of your own volition - the pain can be unbearable!

2. Gum Disease and Gingivitis

Gum Disease, or Gingivitis as it is commonly known, is a pesky, but treatable, condition. Gum Disease occurs when you don't brush as often as you should and you don't regularly visit the dentist. Gum Disease can cause bad breath, bleeding gums, and erosion. If the problem persists long enough without treatment you may need to have your gums grafted. This is a serious condition that is easily treatable through regular visits.

3. Cavities

If you have ever suffered through a cavity then you know how painful it can be to eat. Having a dentist remove your cavity is not only important because of the discomfort you will no doubt feel, but also because your cavity may necessitate a root canal if left alone long enough. Not only is a root canal a much more involved procedure, the cost and pain involved are also significantly higher.

Visiting your dentist, however uncomfortable or scary, is much better than the alternative: higher prices and an unhealthy lifestyle. If you show your mouth the care it needs you will notice that not only do you feel more confident, you will also be healthier. If you haven't visited your oral care professional in a long time, give them a call today; you won't regret it.
