Kumarakom is a wonderful backwater tourist village around 10 to 15 Km from the town of Kottayam in the God's Own State of Kerala. Kumarakom can be called the Venice of Kerala. Kottayam is around 3 hours from Ernakulam/Cochin by car. Ernakulam is the financial capital of Kerala. Ernakulam has a world class airport at Nedumbassery. Kerala is one of the smaller states located in the Incredible and Mystical country of India. Kerala is one of the southern states of the country of India. The Language sppoken in the state of Kerala is Malayalam Kumarakom is is a quaint old town with more than 300 years of history. One can still see the ancient houses preserved in a very good manner even today. They have an interesting concept of a boat called House Boats. These house boats have been remodeled from Boats which used to carry agricultural produce during the early 1940's and 1950's. House boats as the name suggests are boats for boarding and lodging while you leisurely cruise around the Backwaters of Kumarakom. These house boats are available for a duration of minimum 4 hours to a maximum of 2 Nights and 2 Days. House boats are fitted with all Modern amenities such as Refrigerator, Television, Air Conditioning, Beds, Bathroom, Kitchen, Kitchen Range. These house boats look similar to Noah's Ark. It is an experience worth spending your money and time on. The cost a house boat may range from 25,000 INR(Indian Rupees) or 500 Dollars for a duration of 12 hours to 50,000 INR or 1000 Dollars for a duration of 24 hours. Other places to visit in Kumarakom is the the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Taj Garden Retreat. Kerala also has a locally made alcholic beverage called toddy or Kaal. It is white in color and is obtained from sap of the Palm and coconut water. and is available in local Bars known as Toddy Shops. Kumarakom is also known for its gastronimical delights such Karimeen Porichathu, Meen Molli, Karimeen Pollichathu. Karimeen is a type of fish.
