Candida is a common term for a group of yeast called the Candida albicans that frequently affect the skin. The yeast usually lives in the body and in small numbers. It normally resides in the intestinal tract, mouth, and throat. Its population is controlled by immune system however, if the bacteria are killed by antibiotics or if a person's immune system weakens, the population of Candida increases and infection may occur. The yeast can create holes in the intestinal tract, enter the blood stream and find its way into any organ of the body and emits over 70 different toxins. Natural Infections such as oral thrush, vaginal yeast infections and skin infections are results of the proliferation of the yeast.

Candida symptoms vary on the severity of the infection and where it is affecting. Symptoms of infection in the mouth include the growth of yellow - white patches in the mouth and on the tongue. If the patches are scrapped, reddish and painful lesions are seen. The sores may also appear in the throat. The patches may also ache, causing pain and difficulty in swallowing. If the infection develops in the vaginal area, a person may experience irritation. Pain while urinating and vaginal discharge may also occur. Vomiting and diarrhea are the common symptoms of the yeast infection in the digestive tract. Other symptoms of candidiasis include itchy skin rashes, skin inflammation, small blisters, and rash on the armpits, under the breast and in skin folds.

Infections that are caused by Candida can become very serious for people that have a weakened immune system. It's possible for the infection to spread to the brain and heart. If an infection is left untreated the result could be endocarditis or inflammation of the heart's inner layer, nephritis or kidney inflammation, meningitis or the inflammation of the protective membrances of the spinal cord and brain.

In order to stop a Candida infection from spreading, thus preventing any future complications, several treatment options are available. The first thing to do is avoid eating foods that have are rich in sugar or carbohydrates and gluten grains since Candida's main source of food is sugar. Additionally, eliminate any foods that contain yeast or has been fermented with yeast as this supports the growth of Candida.

Some examples of these foods are yeast extract, stock cubes, foods containing vinegar, black tea, alcohol, and bread. Encourage a strong immune system by eating protein rich foods and good saturated fats and oils. Eat fresh vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, and salad. Take vitamin and mineral supplements that are sugar and yeast free. Last, if you are taking anti-ulcer medications, steroids, or antibiotics, you should talk to your doctor to determine the best way to avoid the development of a Candida infection.

Candida can be easily prevented by following a proper diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and taking supplements that support the body's friendly bacteria. By following these guidelines, any infection you may have will begin to disappear and you will be able to recover.
