subject: A Few Tips About Online Dating Sites [print this page]

Online dating has now gained acceptance as a way for meeting singles for relationships. In fact, many marriages today are a result of internet personals. This article will offer a few tips about online dating sites, for successful and safe mate-searching.

1. Choose the right dating site for you. Some people have been running to free dating sites. Why pay when you can get it free, right? Wrong. You see, while safety cannot be one hundred percent guaranteed anywhere, online or offline, people of ill intentions love to use free dating sites (why pay to wreck havoc when you can do it for free?).

Also, the caliber of singles you will typically meet in free sites is usually not that high - you may have to weed through hundreds if not thousands of profiles to come across one serious and compatible single's profile, only to find out that she/he is not even be looking for a partner any more. It is easy to forget to take down a personal profile in a site that you are not paying for.

2. Still on choice of dating site. Different dating sites cater to different interests, passions, and even sexual orientations. If your interest is finding a marriage partner you don't want to go to a fun-based site. If you are gay or lesbian your interest may be better served in a gay or lesbian dating service. The decision about the right type of dating site depends on the type of relationship you want, your lifestyle, and other interests.

3. Be safe. Don't reveal personal information on your personal profile and never use your last name in the ad, screen ID or email. You would be surprised at how much information a savvy web user can dig out using just a small portion of your personal info. Reveal such information when you feel you have met the right person, and in stages (not all at once). Use a different email address for online dating purposes. There is no such thing as "too safe", online of offline.

4. Post a good photo. You will keep hearing this if you read online dating information. Personal ads with a photo attract far more responses than those that don't. Post a good photo that shows you in good light. And no, you don't have to smile in the photo. If the photo shows an aspect of you (even seriousness) it could still work. You want to attract a mate that is looking for someone like you. Some dating sites allow more than one photo so take advantage of this to show different aspects of yourself.

5. Be honest. Avoid even what are referred to as "white lies" especially if you are looking for a serious relationship. Such lies include posting an old photo, chopping a few years off your true age, lying about your job or profession, and lying about your income, to name but a few. Your lies could catch up with you, and if they do the scene may not be pretty.
