subject: Steps To Developing A Beautiful Garden On Your Balcony. [print this page]

Apartments provide necessary accommodations for many households, but often lack the relaxing environment an outdoor space may present in a home. A balcony garden is easy to create, providing a beautiful area to sit and watch the sun go down (or rise) while increasing your privacy.

The first step towards creating a balcony garden is to watch the movement of the sun during the day. Because many plants have diverse qualities, plants should be chosen carefully depending on the abundance or lack of sunlight; different types of plants cannot survive in intense sunlight while others need an immense amount of sun to survive. Building a balcony garden around strategically placed furniture can not only provide a beautiful place to relax, but a great place to enjoy the sun.

Flower beds are usually created in small or large containers by most apartment residents. Determining the weight capacity of a balcony is the most important step before creating a desirable outdoor space. Strategically placing a larger plant in the center of an outdoor garden with a surrounding of smaller plants can create a simple, yet elegant style. Do not forget to consider the amount of wind hitting the balcony to determine the weight and size of furniture, plants and decorations being placed in the balcony garden.

Adding lengthy and vivacious plants to cover the edges of containers or pots creates an invigorating garden space. Vegetable gardens are a great success in outdoor spaces if given the proper amount of sunlight.

Herb gardens and hanging plant holders add personality to a drab space in a balcony garden. Even if you don't use the herbs for cooking, the aroma can be very pleasant.

If you are looking for more privacy from the neighbors, consider a pretty creeper growing over a wooden trellis installed on the sides of the balcony. Consider the location of the sun before placing trellises for privacy conflicts

Hanging baskets are an excellent way to utilizing and increasing space while presenting an attractive atmosphere. Whether hanging from the ceiling or filling a bare wall space, hanging plants add personality and style. Make sure they don't block out all the sun though, as your other plants will suffer. When watering hanging plants it is important to be extremely careful to not spill or over water, to avoid water damage to your balcony or lower balconies. Having the proper draining materials will decrease the amount of water damage to a neighboring balcony.

Firmly attached window boxes bring personality to a dull balcony. Remember not to overflow window boxes with water.

As an apartment resident, it is easy to forget how to dress up an outdoor space An elegant balcony garden is easily obtainable through hard work and a solid design plan.
