subject: How To Remove A Stubborn Wedding Ring [print this page]

Imagine placing your beautiful ring on your finger only to later discover that the ring is stuck and cannot come off. Often this common situation instills panic into many brides. While you love your ring, you do not want it to be a permanent part of your finger.

One of the reasons that wedding rings so easily get stuck is that many people simply don't take them off. Oftentimes we also choose wedding bands that fit snugly. However, over the years, if you gain a little weight, all of a sudden the size of your finger can expand. If someone injures his or her ring finger, it can also end up changing the size.

One important rule of thumb in trying to remove a ring that is stuck is that you shouldn't force it. If you are feeling pain at any time during the process it is time to stop. Believe it or not people have actually damaged their fingers just trying to take off rings.

Try to reduce the size of your hand. Rings often become stuck due to swelling. Soaking your hand in a bowl of water that has been filled with ice can help to lessen any swelling that you may be experiencing. Try holding your hand above your head for a few minutes. This will cause less blood to flow in your hand and will reduce the size of your hand. Fingers tend to swell in the morning and to get smaller as the day progresses. Try removing your ring late in the day when it will be the easiest. Another common tactic for removing a difficult ring is to make the area more slippery. This can help the ring to slide off the finger. Try using a petroleum jelly or other form of lubrication. Often simple moisturizer will aid in ring removal.

People can very commonly get a ring off a swollen finger with some lubrication. You can try Vaseline, moisturizer or soap. Using one of these products, try to twist your ring from side to side.

Tungsten rings are particularly durable. Some say that tungsten wedding bands cannot be cut off. A common but untrue story states that a stuck tungsten ring can only be removed by first removing the finger! The fact is that tungsten rings can easily be removed using special tools at the hospital. Your jeweler most likely will be unable to help with the removal of this very strong metal.
