subject: Avoid Starving And Lose Weight [print this page]

Many people believe that losing weight is painful. They believe that you must go hungry constantly. Many refrain from setting a weight loss goal because they cannot stand going hungry and the frustrations that hunger brings. For a lot of people it is better to be overweight than to be hungry, and who can blame

them. Being hungry sucks!

If the only way to lose weight was to starve very few people would be at their ideal weight. The vast majority of the planet would be extremely overweight! It is not necessary to starve to lose weight.

Our body is marvellous! It tells us when we are hungry. It is equipped with a protection mechanism that lets you know when you need eat. Hunger notifies the body that it is time to eat. To sustain a healthy level of energy and have the reserves necessary for cell maintenance, eat when your body tells you to eat. Serious hungry pangs are a signal from the body, telling you it is in danger and needs food to restore balance. The signals should not be ignored!

The body has no idea that food is plentiful in the 21st Century. The body acts the same way it did in ancient times. The human body has not changed since then. When ancients were living in caves they relied on the ability to hunt for food, in order to feed themselves. They would go days or weeks without a kill. The body would send them warning signals, telling them to eat or die. When they did eat, the body stored as much of the energy as it could in reserve as fat! How do you keep the body from storing food energy as fat?

Starving yourself does not work. Nature will not allow you to starve yourself, maintain your health, and lose weight. You can get thin through extreme deprivation, but we have all seen the effects of this kind of dieting. Look at pictures of children in third world countries that are starving. They are pretty well lifeless, and could die quite easily.

You know that starvation diets do not work, and you do not want to spend 2 hours each day at the gym. How can you lose weight then? The truth is, eating regular nutrient packed meals, thus allowing your body to fill itself to satisfaction, is the key to reaching and maintaining a healthy, slim body. By not going hungry, you will avoid overeating. Going hungry will eventually lead you to a point where you end up gorging, and should be avoided.

Eat five or six, small, healthy meals divided up throughout the day. Eat the same quantity of food you should eat, but spread throughout more meals. Try to avoid having the last meal near your bedtime. Ideally, you should not be eating before bed. If you have eaten six meals, you shouldn't be hungry. If you

still are, try a protein shake or something with high fiber.

When you feel hungry, eat as soon as possible. If you wait long, the body will go into panic mode. It will start thinking that it will not have enough resources to maintain itself. You will then overeat! Eating frequent, smaller meals will keep your body satisfied, As a result, you will be less likely to overindulge.

Do not skip meals in the hope that you will help burn some extra calories. Skipping a meal will save some calories or fat intake, but, as explained earlier, there are negative effects from doing so. By skipping meals, you are slowing down your metabolism. When the body thinks there is a food shortage, it stores extra fat, and slows down the amount of fat it burns. The bodies natural instincts are triggered. You end up putting on extra weight, while burning fewer calories, and storing fat. Starving yourself just does not work!

In addition to eating smaller meals, more frequently, teach yourself to eat slowly. Put down the utensils between each bite. Chew for longer than normal. It takes twenty 20 minutes to realize the body is full, thus satisified. Eating at a fast pace, does not give the body sufficient time to recognise that it is full, and give you that information. Eating at a slower pace will allow you to receive these signals at an earlier stage. You will avoid the terrible feeling of being stuffed.

Spend 15 minutes exercising each day. You can even split it up throughout the day. Leave for work 5 minutes early and walk to a bus stop farther away then normal. Park the car 5 minutes farther away than usual. At lunch, walk for five minutes. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk to the store instead of driving. It is possible to exercise 15, 30, 45, or even 60 minutes each day, by doing micro exercise sessions. Do not starve yourself, it does not work!
